MSN Degree in the Nurse Anesthesia Program

March 19, 2013

I am a nursing professional from India who now lives and works in Houston. At 33, I feel strongly that now is the best time for me to return to advanced study to further my career. In addition to my B.S. in Nursing, perhaps what distinguishes me most from other applicants to your program is that I also hold a Masters Degree in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. I feel that this speaks well to both my passion for helping the weaker members of our society and my profound appreciation for advanced education. I seek to become a certified nurse professional in the area of anesthesia because I believe that it is here where I might be able to realize my fullest professional potential.

Also of critical importance to my candidacy to your program is my extensive experience as a critical care nurse for more than three years, a nursing educator for one year, a nurse manager for one year and a floor nurse for three years. It is my sincere hope to further improve my knowledge and skills by completing your highly esteemed program. I am favorably impressed by many aspects of the work of the nursing anesthesia professional, their  high level of autonomy, and the wide variety of skills that they must master. This is why I see this as the most rewarding career to which I might aspire.  Some of my co-workers are in nurse anesthesia school undergoing highly competitive training, and I long for this challenge myself.  I am looking forward to acquiring ever greater skill as a nurse.

I especially look forward to doing research in the area of pain management for cancer patients. I hope to someday have the profound privilege of teaching in my field. I am as dedicated to research in nursing as I am practice and this is why I have worked as a volunteer in a rehabilitation center for cancer patients, so as to come to better understand their struggle. My work experience includes ICU nursing (medical and surgical), Cardio vascular and thoracic surgery ICU, Telemetry, Nursing supervision, and Nursing Instruction. With almost 10 years of nursing experience in a wide variety of settings, I feel that I have the necessary maturity and high level of motivation to make a great success of your program. I especially thrive on working with very acute and critically ill patients in cardio-vascular and thoracic surgery ICUs and I hold a critical care nursing certification.

With extensive experience in handling monitoring and treatment equipment, I currently work in one of the world’s best known hospitals. At the University of XXXX Cancer Center, I especially enjoy the team work among our clinical nurse specialists and nursing experts. I have learned a great deal here at the Cancer Center and this has helped to inspire me with the confidence and motivation to attend your program. I have a real passion for nursing, and the ability to learn quickly. I work well under pressure and work especially hard to constantly refine my skills to do multiple tasking.

My greatest dream in life is to make significant contributions to the research literature in Nursing Anesthesia. My dear husband is an MRI and CT scan technologist whose support provides me with additional strength so that I will be able to assiduously devote myself to your program. I spent the first 27 years of my life in India, growing up near paddy fields with cows wandering in the streets and I will always be sentimental about my country of origin. I hope to return to India some day to train nurses so as to contribute to my people.
